The mission of the Vassar College Writing Center is to facilitate a community of writers that empowers individuals to direct their own education through the social process of writing. The Writing Center

  1. Nurtures the ongoing discovery and creation of knowledge through critical inquiry and collaborative dialogue;
  2. Cultivates the articulate and appropriate expression of ideas;
  3. Promotes interdisciplinary thinking and knowledge transfer beyond the constraints of a classroom;
  4. Challenges students to claim agency through the act of writing;
  5. and, affords consultants the opportunity to evolve as theoretically and pedagogically-informed writers who can speak cogently about their practice.

The Writing Center therefore offers audience-based feedback to writers from all disciplines and of all skill levels as they:

  1. Formulate Arguments: Participate in a scholarly conversation by crafting a paper with a clear, well-organized argument and establishing its relevance to the intended audience;
  2. Marshal Evidence: Identify, evaluate, and accurately represent an understanding of primary and secondary source materials (summary, paraphrase, quotation) and show the relevance of those materials to their own arguments;
  3. Practice 'Writing as Process': Engage various strategies for using writing to analyze and develop their ideas (free-writing, idea-mapping, reverse-outlining, revising, etc.);
  4. Understand and Value Academic Integrity: Distinguish between plagiarism and the responsible use of sources and cite according to disciplinary conventions; and,
  5. Participate in Conventions of Mechanics and Usage: Formulate their ideas in clear and cogent prose while adhering to rules of grammatical correctness.
